With the new Kia Optima, the South Korean automotive giant has created a large executive saloon that manages to provide space, comfort and stylish good looks in a single package, creating a car that is sure to be highly sought-after.
As is fitting for an executive saloon, the new Kia Optima is a large car that uses clever styling to reduce its size in the eye of the beholder. In fact the Optima's styling isn't just functional, it's actually rather attractive. Take, for example, the 17-inch alloy wheels, the continuous line created by the headlamp clusters and the signature narrow Kia grille, or the metallic flourish that tops the doors. Step up a trim level to the '3' specification and the Optima gets even more chic, with the wheels replaced by 18-inch alloys and the grille featuring a smattering of metallic elements to make it stand out even more.
The interior of the new Kia Optima is as sturdy and long-lasting as you would expect from an executive saloon car, with a mix of hard-wearing and soft-touch plastics used to good effect throughout. A touchscreen-operated infotainment system comes as standard, with the entry-level '2' trim receiving a seven-inch screen that includes satellite navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and DAB digital radio. There's also a USB socket so that you can link your mobile phone to the car's systems, whilst the higher '3' and '4' trims receive a larger eight-inch screen instead.
It's true that the new Kia Optima comes with a single choice of engine under the bonnet, but it's an engine that has been proven to be reliable and economical too, so it should suit any tastes. The engine in question is Kia's 1.7-litre CRDi ISGi diesel unit that draws on 139bhp to hit a top speed of 121mph (126mph if you opt for the seven-speed automatic gearbox over the six-speed manual). Fuel economy stands at 55.4mpg, whilst CO2 emissions measure just 110g/km.
The new Kia Optima includes an impressive array of safety equipment as standard. For a start there is a full complement of airbags, including side and curtain airbags, as well as ISOFIX child-seat fixing points. In terms of technology, the new Optima features ABS, hill-start assist, electronic stability control and intelligent stop and go systems across the range. It's no surprise that the car has received a five-star crash-safety rating from the experts at Euro NCAP.
