The Sportage is an important car for Kia, as it's arguably the car that really put the South Korean manufacturer on the map and on the nation's roads. The latest iteration, the new Kia Sportage, is a small SUV that continues to impress with a solid design and plenty of impressive features.
The design of the new Kia Sportage offers more of a facelift from previous models than a full overhaul, but it's still a bold, strong and reliable look. The new Kia Sportage has retained the sloping roof line and wide arches from previous iterations, but new flourishes come in the shape of Kia's narrowed grille and slightly elevated headlamp clusters. LED running lights feature as standard across the range, and the entry level Sportage also features 16-inch alloy wheels. Higher trim specs add up to 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and 'Ice-Cube' fog lights.
As you would expect for a manufacturer with an increasingly impressive reputation for quality, the interior of the new Kia Sportage is very well-constructed indeed. The controls and switchgear are well-damped and satisfying to use, whilst the interior is fitted out with matte plastics and metallic flourishes. A leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever come as standard, whilst higher trim options also come with glossy black inserts and leather upholstery.
The new Kia Sportage comes with a range of engines to choose between, starting with the 130bhp 1.6-litre GDI petrol. A turbo charged unit is also available in the same size, harnessing an impressive 174bhp. There's also the option of a 2.0-litre diesel engine with either 134bhp or 182bhp, but the most economic choice is the 1.7-litre CRDi unit which can return a fuel economy of 61.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.
The new Kia Sportage features a list of safety technology that is exceptionally generous by any manufacturer's standards. As standard, your Sportage will come equipped with hill-start assist, trailer stability assist, downhill brake control and cruise control, whilst higher trims add speed limit information and automatic high-beams amongst other features. There's also the full-range of protective airbags and ISOFIX child-seat mountings and, with such a large array of both passive and active safety features included as standard, it's no surprise that the new Kia Sportage boasts a full five-star crash-safety rating from Euro NCAP.
