Kia Niro

Kia has entered the compact crossover market with the new Kia Niro, a car that uses a hybrid fuel system for greater economy and is sure to be a big seller for the increasingly popular manufacturer.

The new Kia Niro has been designed to be the quintessential compact crossover SUV, and its design has been created to instantly signify its credentials while still retaining some of the quirky Kia charm. The new Niro is a broad car, with a low-slung and sloped bonnet leading gently to a typically slim, stylish grille. Elsewhere the Niro is clearly solid, and built to give an air of dependability, but it's not without modern touches. For a start there are LED tail lights and LED daytime running lights, but the Niro also makes an impression by arriving on 16-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin of the new Kia Niro continues the South Korean manufacturer's trend of providing a comfortable, versatile and robust interior. The Niro's interior shares various elements with other vehicles in the Kia range, such as a good mix of hard-wearing plastics and soft-touch materials. The seating and steering wheel both offer a good level of adjustment which, when considered alongside its high roofline, means that the new Kia Niro offers an ample amount of interior space for pretty much any driver and passengers.

Engines and performance

The new Kia Niro is a hybrid petrol and electric vehicle which uses an electric motor alongside a traditional petrol unit to power itself. When fully charged, the electric motor can power the car before being recharged via the petrol engine's movement. The petrol engine in question is a 1.6-litre GDi unit that can draw on 139bh and, combined with the electric motor, the Niro produces just 88g/km of CO2.

Safety and technology

The Kia Niro comes with a maximum five-star safety rating from the crash-safety experts at Euro NCAP, so you can rest assured that it is one of the most protective vehicles on the market today. The Niro features seven airbags, including side-curtain airbags and a knee-height airbag for the driver, as well as ISOFIX child-seat fixings. A range of technology also comes as standard, including ABS, electronic stability control and lane keep assist, amongst others.
